Employee Appreciation Gifting Guide

Employee Appreciation Gifting Guide

Anyone who has employees knows that a reliable, trustworthy, and hardworking team makes all the difference. A pat on the back or a "good job" is nice but showing your appreciation goes much further.

What is impactful employee appreciation and recognition?

Employee appreciation is openly recognizing and complementing an employee's accomplishment, work ethic, and/or behavior. This form of recognition can be given by businesses and organizations to show gratitude and recognition, motivate employees, boost office morale, and incentivize desired behaviors. When an employer routinely shows well-deserved and genuine praise to their employees, they will quickly reap the benefits of an employee's full potential.

According to a study done by The Quantum Workplace, "Organizations with sophisticated recognition programs are 12x more likely to have strong business outcomes."

When should I give an employee appreciation gift?

  • Employee of the Month: Recognize key employees each month by acknowledging and rewarding those who have made a unique impact.  Show them and others that you see and acknowledge their hard work. This not only encourages the Employee of the Month to keep up the good work, but it inspires other employees to follow.
  • When an employee has gone above and beyond: Spontaneous gifts of appreciation go a long way in showing how thankful you are for the hard work of your team.
  • When an employee has reached a goal or finished a project: Recognize a job well done as an employee completes a project or reaches a goal. This will spur them on to what's ahead!
  • Welcoming a new employee: Laurie Walters, who works in HR at Washington Trust Bank says, "Here at Washington Trust Bank our amazing culture is one of the keys to our longevity.  We believe it is important to welcome new team members and let them know we are excited to have them on our team."
  • Just because!: Impromptu gifts of appreciation can go a long way in showing how thankful you are for the hard work of your team.

The DOs and DON'Ts of Employee gifting:

DON'T:

  • Assume each employee would like the same gift. To truly show how much you care and appreciate your employees, give a gift that suits each one individually.
  • Just fill a bag with company swag and call it good! This doesn't look like a lot of thought was put into the gift and lets be honest, they're at work all day and sometimes something different from anything work-related is just what they need!
  • Forget to add a personalized touch. A note expressing why you appreciate them and their hard work.

DO:

  • Give an employee appreciation gift that they wouldn't necessarily buy themselves. A unique gift stands out!
  • Listen, pay attention, and know your employee and what they like and enjoy.
  • Show appreciation throughout the year, not just on holidays
